Chain of Gold - Cassandra Clare (NO SPOILERS)

Title - Chain of Gold
Author - Cassandra Clare
Series - The Last Hours #1
Genre - YA Fantasy
ISBN - 978-1-4063-5809-4
Format - Hardback
My Copy - Purchased
Where you can find it - Goodreads - Amazon UK - Amazon US - Book Depository - Waterstones - Barnes & Noble - Indigo

Chain of Gold is the first book in a new Shadowhunter series by the amazing Cassandra Clare, I honestly haven't been reading much recently but this was something I couldn't let pass me by, a thought occurred to me as I was on the bus going to buy this book, I started reading this series ten years ago, in 2010, and I'm still coming back for more.

This book is in the same realm as the Infernal Devices series, but these characters hold their own, Cordelia, James, Lucie, Mathew, Thomas and many others have to do as many before them have and fight for the lives of their fellow Nephilim and also the mundanes, it shouldn't fall on their shoulders but they are willing to take not only the fall, but the risk as well. James and the gang must deal with hormones and demonic creatures that no one has ever encounter before, add in a dash of love and a lot of heartbreak and it spell for an amazing book.

So I wasn't too sure at first about this book because even though the family tree in the back of the Clockwork Princess is known to be false in parts I kind of liked the way it was, without giving out any spoilers, so far there are two things that I can say is wrong. I have lots of feelings about this that I will get into when I post my spoiler review but for right now all I'm going to say is that don't take the deaths or marriages to heart, because I'm guessing most of it will change.

Character wise, I really enjoyed reading from Cordelia's POV, and James' POV as well, I feel like Lucie's was there to give you certain aspects of the story but I wasn't as in to them as the others, there is something about Cordelia that reminds me of lots of 'modern' Shadowhunter characters she is selfless and compared to some in the series that I won't name here, it's refreshing.

James was good, at first I was a bit annoyed at him but when I figured out what was wrong with him I realised that the icky feeling I was getting in the beginning was because I was realising that what was happening wasn't quite right, Again most of James' storyline is full of spoilers so I won't talk about him much here, but know that he is a worthy successor to Will, Jem, Jace, and all the men who came after him.

This book is really hard to write about without giving out spoilers so I will not talk too much about the rest of the characters but I will say that the representation is phenomenal and Cassandra Clare has always been at the top of her game when it comes to representing the communities that don't get a lot of representation and even in a book where it's set in a time where it's not particularly accepted. I can't wait to see where this series is headed, and as of right now the next book is set to be released in March of 2021 so I cannot wait for it.

So to wrap up, even if you haven't read any of the Shadowhunter series, you could still enjoy this book, there will be things referenced but it isn't mandatory to understand what's going on. It's a really good read and one I am glad to have read.

Would you trade your soul mate for your soul?
A Shadowhunter’s life is bound by duty. Constrained by honour. The word of a Shadowhunter is a solemn pledge, and no vow is more sacred than the vow that binds parabatai, warrior partners—sworn to fight together, die together, but never to fall in love.
Emma Carstairs has learned that the love she shares with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, isn’t just forbidden—it could destroy them both. She knows she should run from Julian. But how can she when the Blackthorns are threatened by enemies on all sides?
Their only hope is the Black Volume of the Dead, a spell book of terrible power. Everyone wants it. Only the Blackthorns can find it. Spurred on by a dark bargain with the Seelie Queen, Emma; her best friend, Cristina; and Mark and Julian Blackthorn journey into the Courts of Faerie, where glittering revels hide bloody danger and no promise can be trusted. Meanwhile, rising tension between Shadowhunters and Downworlders has produced the Cohort, an extremist group of Shadowhunters dedicated to registering Downworlders and “unsuitable” Nephilim. They’ll do anything in their power to expose Julian’s secrets and take the Los Angeles Institute for their own.
When Downworlders turn against the Clave, a new threat rises in the form of the Lord of Shadows—the Unseelie King, who sends his greatest warriors to slaughter those with Blackthorn blood and seize the Black Volume. As dangers close in, Julian devises a risky scheme that depends on the cooperation of an unpredictable enemy. But success may come with a price he and Emma cannot even imagine, one that will bring with it a reckoning of blood that could have repercussions for everyone and everything they hold dear.

I finished this book about an hour ago, and i am still trying to put my thoughts straight and actually regretting reading the book so quickly purely because we will not be getting another for quite some time.
I have been in a reading slump since reading Lady Midnight last year and i didn't even know if i was going to be able to read this book but once i started i couldn't stop and i read far into the night.

Going to the start of this book, i was worried i wouldn't remember what had happened previously but it all came flooding back when i opened the book.
I may mention spoilers from Lady Midnight or any of the other previous books in the shadow hunter world. So if you haven't read them i don't suggest you should read this.

Now onto the review, I am still not sure what to think of this book, my initial reaction is to give it 5 stars but i am so confused about things and all of those things cannot be discussed here but it will be in my spoiler review.

The relationships in this book were everywhere and we finally know why Clary refused to marry Jase but then it was never mentioned again, that is one of the things that confused me, why didn't Emma question it when Clary told her. The Relationships going on, well you need a map to remember them all. I don't remember any other Shadow hunter series being like that.

The story flowed to an extent but i felt like it could have been shorter, there were so many parts that were really unnecessary. It felt like the book wrapped up about halfway through then there was something else that they had to deal with.

I could see the set up for the Last Hours series with the picture of Lucie, Tessa, Cordelia and James. Then we have all of the Herondale brilliance with Kit even calling Will and Idiot. I really wanted a bit more though but that is just because the Infernal Devices is my favourite in the chronicles, and i have a feeling the Last Hours will be just as loved.

I don't believe this is as good as Lady Midnight or any of their predecessors so for that reason my rating changed from 5 to 4 as i still loved it and it made me smile, laugh and cry. I think that is the problem when you love a series that has so many books, every new book has a very high standard and sometimes it cannot live up to it.

Until Next Time

Lady Midnight - Cassandra Clare SPOILER REVIEW (PART 2)

If You Haven't Read Lady Midnight Do NOT Read Any Further.....

OK so, there were so many things that happened in this book so lets start right from the beginning and we meet Kit for the first time and i didn't understand this prologue at all until obviously the secret came out at the time i thought it was pointless, so i didn't even mark anything apart from Emma making her first appearance of the book.

When the dead body showed up that's when things really started rolling, and the story making sense of what i at first thought this series is going to be about but again once we find out who the killer i was a bit deflated at first because i thought the entire trilogy was going to be about who is doing the killings and catching that person, but i think the rest of the series is going to be about obviously Annabel Blackthorn and maybe her getting revenge on Nephilim maybe. I don't know.

I fangirled so much in this book and one of the first times was when Ty was described he has unruly black hair and Grey Eyes he is a mixture of Tessa and Will i almost cried, it was magical and hes the only one that looks like that.

The second time was like 10 pages after that and it was when we find out that Jace and Clary run the NY Institute. They have earnt it and it was so good to hear about them and what they are doing with their lives (i will get to the rest of them at the end when i talk about A Long Conversation)

I have to admit i was wondering when this was going to come up, the whole contraception issue. I have seen it asked on Tumblr way to many times and we finally get a conclusion i actually laughed when i read that Clary invented the contraception rune. I can just imagine Jocelyn and Luke's reaction, it would be hilarious.

When we first meet Arthur he seemed very strange, and i actually forgot about his time in Faerie Land with his brother but that is what is wrong with him he hasn't been the same and he thinks Julian is his father it was very sad and also for Julian who killed his father that must be like a knife in the chest.

Mark, Mark was one of the enigmas of this book he was a mystery we didn't know much about him from previous books we have only seen glimpses of him and the fact that he is bisexual just made me happy, Clare is known for putting Race and Sexuality in her books unlike a lot of YA Book its getting better now but this is one of the best in that field. At first i thought something was going to happen between Mark and Cristina but then he starts kissing Fae Princes and Perfect Diego comes back (more about him later) and then the ending happens so i don't think that is going to happen. But i kind of ship Mark and Kieran so i am a bit on the fence about who i want to everyone to end up with.

OMG i almost screamed when i read about Jem telling Emma about when Will literally put his hands in the fire to save his Medicine i stopped reading and posted a pic straight on Instagram

And also when Magnus and Malcolm were literally comparing their Humans like ...

'"I can't remember precisely. Magnus, stop bothering Emma and Julian," he said, and there was a tinge of something like annoyance in his voice. Professional jealousy, Emma guessed. "This is my domain. You've got your own hopeless humans in New York."
"One of those hopeless humans is the father of my child," Magnus pointed out.
Magnus had not ever been pregnant, though that would have been interesting, Emma thought. He and Alec Lightwood had an adopted Warlock child, named Max, who was a scintillating shade of navy blue.
"And," Magnus added, "the rest of them have all saved the world, at least once."
Malcolm gestured toward Julian and Emma. "I have high hopes for these."
Magnus's face broke into a grin. "I'm sure you're right." he said.'

The whole Midnight Theatre thing was actually confusing because the book is called Lady Midnight but Annabelle Blackthorn was never referred to as Lady Midnight, so i have no clue if i missed it or it was never mentioned, and the fact that all of the patrons of The Midnight Theatre are all part Downworlder and that they all have hostility toward Shadowhunters and at first we don't understand it but then everything becomes clear when we find out Annabelle's Fate.

Parabatai Law is one of those things since the series started we have thought we knew everything about but more things just keep coming it actually made sense that is the odd thing about it where one sided love and a crush means nothing but as soon as it turns into requited love then all of a sudden there runes become as powerful as a Warlock Spell. I understand why Emma did what she did at the end but it kind of killed me especially the whole Mark scenario I'm sure we are going to have to put up with like we did with Clary and Simon.

There wasn't a lot of Jem and Emma scenes but there were enough for a first book, like Emma's dad playing Jems violin, and Jem telling he his name and her realising she isn't the only Carstairs, and him telling her about Will, and just right at the beginning where she just misses him, it was all very sweet and i cant wait for more of that.

The whole relationship between Julian and Emma is a odd one i didn't really like it back when we first found out about it, i thought it was going to be drama and angst filled. But it was the opposite it was so beautifully written that it really was a friends to lovers story and it was pretty perfect. I have to admit i laughed my head off at the fact that Clare's male characters seem to get to have sex with the person they love earlier and earlier Jace took 6 books, Will took 3 and Julian took 1. I was so shocked when that happened because i wasn't expecting it at all even all of the kisses they were all in the heat of the moment and after sex they pretended like like it was nothing and they didn't love each other.

There were times when i thought that it was being dragged out and i kept thinking are we near the climax yet because this is getting a little tedious. Then finally we have the ending where we find out it was as we first sort of suspected from about page 250 that it was an inside job. But i never suspected Malcolm at all and the way it was revealed was very quick like ' Oh Malcolm's the guardian hes the one who killed Emma's parents lets sit and talk" i just couldn't get my head around how quick they put it together.

The whole conclusion scene in the Cave was pretty confusing for me and i really wish it wasn't, it was pretty anti-climactic and that is really sad i wish there was more action but we have 2 more books for action so i hope that happens.

New characters Cristina and Diego i don't know how i feel about them, i kind of ship them but at the same time the betrayal seems odd and the way his brother acted if they were going to parabatai then they have to pass tests like we saw in the Shadowhunter Academy series. Wouldn't he of failed them. i don't know how i feel about that but since there will be no Mark & Cristina like i was originally hoping for then i guess i will start shipping Mark & Kieran and Cristina & Diego. As characters go Cristina is pretty much Emma's best friend after Julian and it is a really good relationship someone who she can talk to that isn't Julian, because that is when things start getting rough. I don't particularly like Kieran right now after trying to get Mark sent back to the Wild Hunt and in turn getting Mark almost whipped and Julian and Emma whipped in the process.

Old characters made a few appearances, Jace and Clary made the most even if its just a mention, and it was so good to hear about their lives and what they are doing. And also Alec and Magnus and their little Blueberry.

A Long Conversation was something i read as i was waiting for the bus after buying this book, and i fangirled so hard reading this with Sizzy getting engaged to Magnus talking about the little boy him and Alec want to adopt from Buenos Aires and he is a Nephilim so they don't know if they will allow a Downworld to raise someone of Angel blood and you have protective Daddy Alec and also just Jace asking Clary to marry him ....

But she is dreading giving him an answer WTF i have been waiting for this and she is dreading it how in the world can she be dreading it. I can understand why people are getting fed up with this world because the books are pretty similar they just have different characters and settings. But i personally love it.

I am not saying anything about Kit because i have no words for that hopefully in the next book i can address THAT situation.

UK PAPERBACK PAGES -

37 - The only things she had faith in were revenge and Julian

"Less famous love story."

92 - Every story is a love story

Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy - Cassandra Clare Series Review

Hi all,so this a sort of SPOILER review for Simon journey to ascending and becoming a full Shadowhunter. I will say the review vary in size because some of the stories are a lot shorted than others so there is not much to say on those.

1. Welcome To The Shadowhunter Academy

The first novella in this series Simon is saying goodbye to his life as an ordinary (that he remembers) mundane life, to join the coveted Shadowhunter Academy where Mundanes and Nephilim train to become the best. Along the way Simon will learn the history of the Race he will join.

This was a very intro into the new characters and also getting reacquainted with old familiar faces as well. Like Caterina Loss, Clary, Jace and quite a few others

2. The Lost Herondale

The Lost Herondale tells the tale of Tobias Herondale and his "crimes" and the punishment they inflicted because of that. Like the Law states "The Law is Hard, But Its The Law" and it is a very shocking story of a wife taking the punishment of her husband.

To me this was a bit of a let down, it was good but i was expecting more. The Lost Herondale fell flat compared to the rest of the series.

3. The Whitechapel Fiend

So this novella combines two of my favourite things Jack The Ripper and William Herondale, well Jack the Ripper with a paranormal twist. Jack the Ripper is terrorising London but the London Institute doesn't believe the Killer is Human so the gang go undercover and amazingness ensues. Not to mention Tessa is the one telling the story at the academy and Jace shows up, so you know is going to be awesome.

My favourite so far it was just packed full of amazingness and brilliant quotes so here are some of them...

"Spoon," James said running at his uncle Gabriel and jabbing him in the thigh. Gabriel mussed the boys hair affectionately. "Your such a good boy," he said "I often wonder how you could possibly be Will's."
"Spoon" James said leaning against his uncles leg lovingly. "NO Jamie" Will urged "Your Honourable father has been impugned, ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK"

"Prostitutes" Tessa said. "Quite" Gabriel said "Tessa has such an extensive vocabulary" Will said "Its one of most attractive thing about her, shame about yours Gabriel."

 4. Nothing But Shadows

This is James Herondale's story of his time at the academy and how he meets his Parabati Matthew Fairchild. It was odd to see a Herondale so down trodden and bullied for what he is. I hated Matthew at first he was a mean bully and i couldn't make myself like him but then you find out his story and why he acted like it you do feel sorry for him and understand. In this novella we also she James relationship with his parents and respect he has for his Mum and her feelings.

Quotes.
"How would my Mother feel" James whispered "If she knew i had been sent home i had been sent home because of... - she'll think its because of her."

"Even though we will miss you terribly." "Terribly?" James asked shyly "Your mother says she will be brave and keep a stiff upper lip" Said Father. "Americans are heartless. I will cry into my pillow every night."

5. The Evil We Love

The Evil We Love follows the circle's time at the academy and the dynamic already forming and how they acted at an early age. In the modern day Robert and Izzy Lightwood visit the Academy to tell this story with some drama going on outside the classroom as well with Simon and Izzy trying to figure out what going on between them. This Novella just reaffirmed my hatred for Valentine.

6. Pale Kings & Princes

So this is the start of the pre-cursers for the Dark Artifices series. where we get reacquainted with Helen Blackthorn who makes a deal with the Clave that if she comes and tells the students her story, she and Aelin can come back for one day & night and get married. The story she tells was of a man who was ensnared by fey magic and tricked into loving one, and staying with her for 7 years. The he is released and then finds a nice ShadowHunter wife who he marries and has a son with then all of sudden two toddlers are on his doorstep Mark and Helen, and they raise them as their own, but that's not the whole story. The other part of the story is Simon and Izzy Holly sweet baby Jesus we had so much Sizzy in this, it was unreal. I don't want to spoil too much but if you ship Sizzy you have to read this novella.

7. Bitter of Tongue

So Bitter of Tongue we finally see a real ShadowHunter wedding not disgraced shadowhunters like Jocelyn but we have Helen and Aelins Wedding. Just before this can happen Simon gets trapped in a Fey trap and he gets help from Mark Blackthorn who is still hoping to come back to his family. Simon finally gets back and witnesses Helen and Aelin dressed in gold and marring the people they love.

Quotes

"Cant talk right now," Said Beatriz "Picturing Jace Herondale in a tuxedo in my head he looks like a beautiful spy."

"James Bond" George contributed "James Blonde?"

8. The Fiery Trial

In The Fiery Trial we finally see a Parabati ceremony and it doesn't disappoint Julian and Emma pledge to protect and keep each other safe. The Fiery Trail is what the Parabati ceremony is actually called and then we also some Simon/Clary friendship scenes and its just make me feel really gooey inside but since i don't want to spoil any of this one i will stop here.

 9. Born to Endless Night

So i am going to spoil this because i cant help it. so don't read if you don't want to be spoiled.

Born To endless night all i have to say about this novella is Malec Baby, you have Simon as usual, then you have the entire Lightwood family all in one room and Jace and Clary all baby proofing it was just pure adorableness. Not to mention Simon walks in on Magnus and Alec in bed one of the best parts of this entire series.

Quotes
"Max Lightwood." Magnus found himself blinking, partly in perplexity, but partly because of another feeling he found much easier to define. His vision blurred again and something in his chest had twisted.

The mistake the lightwoods had made was ridiculous, and yet Magnus could not help but be stunned by their offer, and how genuine and sincere it had been.

This was a warlock child, and they were all shadowhunters. Lightwood was an old, proud Shadowhunter name. Max Lightwood had been the Lightwood's youngest son. It was a name of one of their own.

"Maybe one day it will be just you and me, my little Blueberry" Magnus said conversationally. "But not for a long, long time. We'll take care of him, you and i, wont we?"

10. Angel Twice Descending

The last in the series see Simon and his classmates ascending, but before he can do that he must say goodbye to his mundane life. His fears of not being good enough, his relationships are front and centre in this novella his with mum and sister to Clary, Izzy, Jace and all the rest as well as his classmates and Roommate George.

Quotes

"Simon, you do know that descending isn't going to be like getting bitten by a radioactive spider or something right?"
"So your saying i wont be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound? And i don't get my own batmobile? I want my money back."

"Oh nothing much, I'm just joining a supernatural cult of daemon fighters, who've forbidden me to ever see you again, Love Ya."

Isabelle laughed, "I'm not mad, If wed had sex, and you'd forgotten - which, by the way, i assure you would not be possible, daemon amnesia or no daemon amnesia - maybe id be mad"

So that is all for this review
Until Next Time
